Aigars Ozoliņš is a highly talented artist with exceptional professional standards. As one of the most sought-after Latvian scenographers, he is known for his dedication and prolific output. He holds himself to the highest standards, which ensures that he is reliable, delivers quality work and remains in high demand. That is just how Aigars Ozoliņš is. A skilled master, imaginative and versatile in adapting his solutions to a wide range of dramaturgical material. He finds the most thrilling phase of a scenographer's work to be when ideas spark, the final solution crystallises, and the creative connection with the director ignites. Will it blaze into a bright, soaring fire or fade into a dull heap of ash? "The most beautiful moment is when one expressed idea leads to the next, creating a dialogue which makes this profession worthwhile," the artist admits. In designing the stage space, he aims for a figurative approach that grows and evolves from every element – the composition and its individual components, colours, and lighting – into a cohesive whole where the actors seamlessly integrate.
Aigars Ozoliņš was born on 28 April 1970 in Jelgava.
Over 20 years of his work, Aigars Ozoliņš has designed scenography for more than 30 productions at the Dailes Theatre, nearly fifty at the Latvian National Theatre, and around 15 at Liepāja Theatre, as well as for productions at Valmiera Theatre, the Latvian National Opera, the Puppet Theatre, Daugavpils Theatre, and several theatres in Lithuania and Estonia. He has also created scenography for new opera productions at the Sigulda Opera Music Festival in 2017 and 2018. The artist designed scenography for numerous major and prestigious concerts, including the Song Festival Concert marking the 800th anniversary of Riga, held in Mežaparks (2003), the 48th international Eurovision Song Contest at Skonto Hall (2003), the grand dance performance Spēlēju, dancoju (I Played and Danced) at the Ķīpsala Hall (2005), the Opening and Grand Finale concerts of the XXIV Nationwide Latvian Song and Dance Festival in Mežaparks (2008), the Latvian stage dance concert Vēl 100 gadu dejai (Another 100 years of Dance) and the Grand Finale concert Zvaigžņu ceļš (Path of Stars) of the XXVI Nationwide Latvian Song Festival and XVI Dance Festival (2018), the concert Dzimuši Rīgā (Born in Riga) in the square adjacent to the Latvian National Opera (2014), the Opening Concert of the Latvian Presidency of the Council of the European Union at the Latvian National Opera (2015), the open-air performance in Riga Brasa. Pumpurs. Spēks (Brasa. Pumpurs. Power; 2018) and at least fifteen other events. Power, imagination, and quality are the three words that best characterise Aigars Ozoliņš' stage art. However, he is equally notable as a book designer with a highly sophisticated, refined style. His work includes 12 editions of Raksti (Writings) by Imants Ziedonis (1995–2002), each with a distinct grey boulder cover, and eight editions of Raksti (Writings) by Knuts Skujenieks (2003–2008), among other projects). From time to time, the artist also enjoys creating posters, sophisticated greeting cards, invitations, and similar items.
Aigars Ozoliņš graduated from the Decorative Design Department of Riga Secondary School of Applied Arts (1990). He then studied at the Interior Department of the Art Academy of Latvia, before switching to the Scenography Department, from which he graduated in 1996.
The artist also participated at the Prague Scenography Quadrennial (1995).
He received an award at the book art competition Golden Apple Tree for the artistic design for Noah Gordon's book The Physician (2006).
Aigars Ozoliņš was awarded the Order of the Three Stars (Fourth Class, 2019).
