This section features coins whose design was created by the artist – from the initial concept to the final visual solution.
Edgars Folks is a nuanced painter, though he is more widely recognised for his exceptional work as a book illustrator. No one observes nature as meticulously as he does – studying forests, meadows, waters, flora, and fauna with exceptional detail. He has an intimate knowledge of livestock, wild animals, birds, and insects, capturing their forms, complexions, postures, movements, and characters. His attention to detail extends to the slightest head movements, eye expressions, feather direction, subtle colour variations, and the play of muscles beneath the surface. Of course, he understands humans just as well! To him, humans are also an integral part of the natural world. Most peculiar of all is that, while demonstrating an undeniable mastery in understanding, portraying, and delicately capturing these fine details, Edgars Folks effortlessly adapts different stylisation techniques to suit the literary material. He often adds imaginative, vibrant elements that do not exist, yet does so with such conviction that it feels entirely natural – making it clear that this is exactly how it should be. And when you see his work, there's no mistaking it – this is Edgars Folks!
Edgars Folks was born on 12 November 1951 in Ezere.
He graduated from Janis Rozentāls Riga Art Secondary School in 1970 and from the Painting Department of the Art Academy of Latvia in 1976.
He has participated in exhibitions since 1980, and has held several solo exhibitions, including in Sigulda in 2010 and in Riga in 2012 and 2015 (the latter two alongside Signe Folka). In these exhibitions, he showcased distinctive still lifes and landscapes, meticulously painted with the finest brushes, as well as fantastical characters rendered with the same level of intricate detail. The artist has illustrated more than 100 books for children and adults: Zaļās zāles zemē (In the Land of the Green Grass) by Uldis Plotnieks (1980), Brālis ozols, māsa liepa (Brother Oak, Sister Linden) by Jānis Baltvilks (1985; reissued in 2017 with an English translation), selections of Latvian folk songs such as Nevienam tādi zirgi (No One Has Such Horses, 1987) and Man uzauga divas vārpas (I Have Grown Two Ears, 1988), the 68-novel series by Edgar Wallace (early 1990s), and Pūcīte ar zeltainām acīm (The Small Owl with Golden Eyes) by Lelde Stumbre (2018), among others. He has represented Latvian book art at numerous major Baltic and international book art exhibitions, including the European Illustration Triennial in Japan (2001). He has also designed stamps, coats of arms, and the graphic design for Latvijas Banka's coins, including "Christmas Tree", "European Mink", and "Corncrake", among others. Additionally, he has worked on animated films, such as Velniņi (Little Devils, 1999).
He is the recipient of an award from the Editorial Boards of Lithuanian magazines at the 1st Baltic Book Art Triennial in Vilnius (1981) and a diploma and a prize at the 2nd Baltic Book Art Triennial in Vilnius (1984), among others. The coin "Blacksmith Forges in the Sky" from Latvijas Banka's collection was awarded 1st place and named Latvia's Coin of the Year in 2017.
