About the artist

Among the many Latvian illustrators of children's books known for their bright, vivid colours, Gundega Muzikante stands out with her softly muted palette, which evokes a tender, almost "fluffy" atmosphere. This combines, surprisingly naturally, with a dynamic sense of movement, as if caught in a breeze, reflected in the delicate, flowing silhouette lines and the lively actions of the characters. Their fluid arm and leg movements, turns of their heads, and jumps, runs, and flights all contribute to this vibrant energy. All the characters created by Gundega Muzikante reside in a fantastic interspace between the realms of carefully observed reality and boundless imagination, so the characters are also just like that. This interspace conveys an unspoken, invisible and almost ethereal invitation to the reader: the door to your own imagination is wide open, and you too can explore limitless possibilities.

Beloved by children and highly esteemed by professionals, the following children's books illustrated by Gundega Muzikante are noteworthy: Kā ruksītis ciemos gāja (The Piglet Goes Visiting) (1994) and Eža kažociņš (The Hedgehog's Coat) (1996), Pūķa ceļojums (Dragon's Travel) by Inese Zandere (2013), Mājiņa (The Little House) by Aivars Neibarts (2013), Ko nolaupīja gaisa balons jeb Tobiass, Paulīne un Kaķis ceļo pa Spāniju (What the Air-Balloon Stole, or Tobias, Pauline, and the Cat Travel to Spain) and Zvaigžņu tramvajs (Star Tram) by Juris Zvirgzdiņš (2016 and 2018 respectively), among others. "The process is so exciting," the artist reflects on her work. "I sit at home, surrounded by various paints, brushes, and pencils, with a blank sheet of paper in front of me. In this moment, I truly love this work." Slightly stepping outside her usual scope of work, she, along with her colleague and children's book illustrator Ilze Dambe, created an interactive environment for children titled Sunny Corner (2020) at the Aspazija Museum House in Jūrmala. This engaging space allows children to connect with the characters from Aspazija's poems through exciting activities and playful experiences.
