About the artist

Ivars Drulle is an insightful observer of life's events, human characters, and relationships. His observations lead him into layered reflections on parallels with both near and distant history, the inconstancy yet essential constancy of human nature, the brilliance of civilisation's advancements, and its inevitable march towards decline. Through his articles in the magazine Kultūras Diena, he shares insights with readers, often inspiring new ideas for his sculptures. When nominating Ivars Drulle for the Purvītis Prize for his solo exhibition Balstīts uz patiesiem notikumiem (Based on true events, 2011), experts succinctly captured the essence of his unique creative roots. "Figurative compositions that capture isolated moments, offering no direct narrative but leaving ample room for the viewer's imagination to wander. The exhibition reveals the author's profound interest in and contemplation of global events, historical shifts, and underlying patterns. By skilfully balancing melancholy and irony, the artist encourages us to reflect on the sense of helplessness felt by the ordinary individual in the face of historical upheavals." (Solvita Kresa) "Vivid imagination, a paradoxical thought process, and refined stylisation in his works bring pressing societal issues to the forefront. The exhibition makes an important contribution to the local sculpture scene expanding its expressive possibilities to contemporary forms and themes." (Vilnis Vējš) "I see things with sharp clarity, perhaps from unconventional angles." (Ivars Drulle)

Ivars Drulle was born on 21 November 1975 in Riga.

He graduated from the Sculpture Department of Riga Secondary School of Applied Arts in 1996 and from the Sculpture Department of the Art Academy of Latvia in 2000, supplemented his knowledge at Humboldt State University in California (USA, 1998–1999), and obtained an MA at the University of Montana (USA, 2003).

He works in sculpture using both traditional and modern materials, blending it with other art forms to push boundaries and expand the possibilities of figurative expression. He teaches shape design at Riga School of Design and Art. Ivars Drulle writes reflective articles for Kultūras Diena and publishes art essays in online culture journals Satori and Rīgas Laiks. To date, he is the author of five silver collection coins of Latvijas Banka. He is one of the few artists who successfully creates plaster models for his own coin designs. Ivars Drulle is the author of the new state budget briefcase, which metaphorically links its material (ash wood) with renewable resources, while its design evokes the elegance of finely polished crystal (2021).

He has been participating in exhibitions since 2002. He has held nearly ten solo exhibitions in Riga and other cities across Latvia (2005–2019), as well as in the USA (2003), Sweden (2012), and Russia (2012). Ivars Drulle participated in the Venice Biennale (2009), Biennial For Young Art in Russia (2010), group exhibitions in Germany (2010), Belgium (2012), etc.

He received the 1st prize at the stone sculpture competition of the Latvian Artists' Union (2003), the 2nd prize at the competition for a commemorative plaque honouring the savers of Jews during World War II (2005), the Civitella Ranieri Foundation Award (New York, 2012), and Diena Annual Award in Culture (2012). He has been nominated for the Purvītis Prize multiple times, specifically in 2011, 2014, and 2017.
