Kaspars Līdums has become the author of his first collector coin "Chestnut" issued by Latvijas Banka. A true childhood currency and a versatile gift from nature, the chestnut, with its special power to inspire the joy of play, continues to motivate the artist in his professional life.
Now working as a 3D graphic designer, Kaspars Līdums creates visualisations of a "living game" environment, using "green spaces" as a backdrop for a wide range of imagined worlds and visions, tailored to the character of each particular game. He also designs physical elements that are combined with the virtual environment.
Kaspars Līdums shares:
"Studying functional design also gave me an understanding of planning, including urban planning, collaboration with companies from various sectors, and three-dimensional graphics. In my artistic practice, I work in a field specialising in the creation of engaging game spaces. This gives me an opportunity to express my creativity and see my concepts come to life.
Alongside my main work, I put my skills to the test by participating in competitions. This is how I came to create Baltic Stream and Ķemeru Anniņa, environmental design objects in urban spaces. The first work contains a reference to or association with natural forms and movement, evoking the flow of a stream. It brings to mind a shoal of fish and, at the same time, the gentle undulation of the sea.
Anniņa was created in a completely different style. The object was modelled using the so-called layering technique, in which the overall form is broken down into separate planes. This technique allows the structure to be seen through, without revealing a clearly defined figurative form. The sculpture is made of laser-cut aluminium plates and is located in the centre of the square, where it can be viewed from different angles. The layered construction of the object creates an optical illusion: viewed from different angles, the silhouette of the figure appears to change. Conceptually, the work draws on the Latvian Riflemen's song Ķemermiestiņā, while the story of Ķemeru Anniņa serves as a contemporary allegory exploring the essence of womanhood across different eras."
The environmental design object Ķemeru Anniņa was created by Kaspars Līdums in collaboration with Mārtiņš Rozenfelds.
Revealing his plans for the future, Kaspars Līdums says that, alongside the rental services offered by Zaķusalas pirts, a new cultural and creative initiative – a sculpture symposium – is being developed. The aim is to create a contemporary open-air art exhibition set within the untouched natural landscape along the bank of the Daugava, bringing together both experienced and new artists.
