This section features coins whose design was created by the artist – from the initial concept to the final visual solution.
Laimonis Šēnbergs is one of the most notable Latvian poster artists and graphic designers of all time. His giftedness is truly unique. It is a compelling blend of surprising opposites: precision coexists with emotionality, rationalism pairs with aesthetic sophistication, a witty idea complements perfect artistic execution, and a deep connection to the nation's culture contrasts with expressions of stark modernism.
Laimonis Šēnbergs' visual language in graphic signs, posters, Song Festival designs, coin projects, book design, and other artistic endeavours is characterised by a focus on public concerns, a witty approach to solutions, and a clear, highly concise form that remains infused with emotionality. The visual expression is always exquisitely beautiful, graphically clear, pleasing in colour, and harmoniously balanced in subtle shades. In artistic characters, the shape perceived by the eye is surrounded by invisible pulses of association, similarity, and subtle ironic hints. In his best works, the entire set of expressive means seems to have achieved a sense of inevitable harmony, or perfect completeness.
Responsibility and stringency – toward both himself and others, with no compromises – are the qualities that earn the artist the most trusted and demanding roles. Since Latvia regained its independence, he has served as the artistic advisor and the chief design and art expert at Latvijas Banka. He has also served as the Chair of Latvijas Banka's Coin Design Commission and is currently a member of the Commission. Latvia's modern coin art is included in the country's Cultural Canon, largely thanks to Laimonis Šēnbergs.
